I got to visit the house of an Afghan doctor who has done his house up nicely. He lives out in the countryside, where there are no utilities.
He has a micro-hydro plant which grinds wheat on one side and provides electricity for 8 or 9 nearby families.
He also has a biogas generator which uses anaroebic fermentation of manure to generate methane to cook and heat his house.
